Babool Chaal, Kikar Chilka, also known as Babool Bark or Babul Chhal, is a traditional Ayurvedic herbal ingredient obtained from the Babool tree (Acacia nilotica). Rich in naturally occurring tannins, this bark is valued for its astringent properties and traditional uses in oral care and skin cleansing.

Traditional Benefits of Babool Bark

Supports Gum Health: Babool bark has traditionally been used to maintain healthy gums and support everyday oral hygiene.

Promotes Oral Cleanliness: Babool powder is traditionally used in herbal oral-care preparations to help keep the mouth feeling clean and fresh.

Supports Skin Care: Its astringent properties make it a traditional ingredient in external herbal preparations for skin cleansing.

Traditional Digestive Use: In Ayurveda, babul bark has been used in traditional preparations for digestive wellness. Internal use should only be considered with qualified professional guidance.

Astringent Properties: Traditionally valued for its tissue-tightening properties, Babool bark is used in selected herbal preparations.

Directions for use

To use dried Babool Chaal, boil small pieces of the bark in water for 10–15 minutes to prepare a soothing herbal decoction, then strain and drink.

Botanical Information

Botanical Name: Acacia nilotica (L.) Willd. ex Delile

Family: Fabaceae

Common Names: Babool, Babul, Kikar, Kikar Chilka, Babool Chhal

Part Used: Bark

Babool Tree in English: Commonly called the gum arabic tree or Egyptian thorn, depending on the species and region.

The Babool plant is a thorny tree traditionally valued for its bark, gum, and pods. Babool gum, also known as Babool tree gum, is a separate product from the bark. Likewise, the babul tree fruit refers to its pods, not its bark. Names such as desi babool and kiker tree are used regionally.

Note: Avoid self-prescribing Babool bark internally or using it to treat bleeding, diarrhoea, or other medical conditions. For oral care, use products specifically prepared for that purpose; consult a qualified professional if symptoms persist.
